Definition of Sufism
Sufism is a science to purify the soul and heart, purifying morals to attain true happiness, or on the way home.
Sufism was originally a movement of asceticism or avoiding worldly things in Islam, and in its development gave birth to the tradition of Islamic mysticism.
Sufi thought first appeared in the Middle East in the 8th century, now this tradition has spread to all parts of the world. Sufism is a concept in Islam, which is defined by experts to be the inner part, Islamic mystical dimension; others have the opinion that Sufism is a perennial philosophy that existed before the presence of religion, expression that developed together with the religion of Islam.
Etymology of Sufism
There are several sources about the etymology of the word "Sufi". The general view is that it comes from the Suf (صوف), Arabic for wool, refers to the modest robes worn by Muslim acetics.
But not all Sufis wear robes or woolen clothes. There are also those who have the opinion that Sufi comes from the word saf ., that is, the line in prayer.
Read it too :
- Syahadat Tauhid
- Tauhid Uluhiyah
- Tauhid Rububiyah
Another etymological theory reveals that the root of the Sufi word is Safa . (صفا), which means purity. This puts emphasis on Sufism, namely purity of heart and soul. Another theory says that Sufism has its origin from the Greek word theosofie which means divine science.
Examples of Sufism
The following is an example of Sufi understanding or tasawwuf understanding in the position of the sharia into four spiritual levels
Shari'ah in the perspective of Sufism is described as a chart of the Four Spiritual Levels in Islam, namely
- Syariat
- Tariqah or tarekat
- The fact
- Ma'rifat
One level becomes the foundation for the next level, then it is impossible to reach the next level but leave the previous level.
For example, if someone has started to enter a level (religious depth) tarekat, this does not mean that he is able to leave the Shari'ah. Who begins to understand the truth, then he is still obliged to carry out the laws and provisions of the Shari'a and the tarekat.
Basic Science of Sufism
Many opinions and assumptions if the science of Sufism and the practice of Sufism is a heresy and heresy that has no basis in the Qur'an and Hadith. in the following we will explain
"Sufism and Sufism are religious practices that have the basis of the Qur'an and also emulate the morals and behavior of the Prophet SAW in his sunnahs,”
The development of Sufism until the twentieth century 5 Hijri is the era of the codification of Sufism as a discipline by Imam Ghazali, one of whose studies has been included in the book Ihya Ulumiddin.
"Although the terminology of Sufism and Sufism did not exist in the time of the Prophet and his companions, However, the practice of Sufism and Sufistic behavior has existed since the time of the Prophet. Who gives an example? Ya, Rasulullah himself, and then followed by Abu Bakr Assidiq, Sayyidina Umar, Sayyidina Uthman and Sayyidina Ali and other senior companions.
They are more concerned with the affairs of the hereafter than the affairs of the world, although they still do not abandon an obligation of worldly affairs. That is the true Sufi practice which was later referred to by experts as the study and discipline of Sufism,”
Because of that, who are we to judge a teaching while we do not understand the history of Sufism and the practice of Sufism which turns out to have its source from the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet.
"So we have to read and study again and cleanse our hearts from behavior that feels self-righteous or arrogant",”
How is the practice of Sufism in the modern era ?
Practice feelings and thoughts that we are always with Allah at all times and times.
By feeling always watched by Allah, then a person can feel more careful of actions that harm others.
"The practice can be seen in the form of diligent prayer and other fardu worship", then always do good and also spread love and do not want to do mafsadat or damage.
