Tanda Waqaf

After we know waqf parts, whether it is a good waqf or a bad one, then what needs to be known next are the signs of waqf that apply in the Mushaf Usmani and those used in Indonesia. Because by paying attention to the sign of waqf it means being able to know the position and degree of ability to do it, at the same time avoiding the forbidden waqf.

Signs of waqf and its meaning

The signs of waqf that apply are divided into two types, which is a sign that it is better to continue (wash) and a sign indicating stop (waqaf). For more details, you can follow the following description::

1. A better sign to stop

a. Tanda me (م) meaning waqf lazim (اَللَّازِمْ)
That is a sign that it is better to stop, even as a scholar’ oblige, considering the waqf on the sign is appropriate as a place of stopping, while the utterance in front of him deserves to be used as the beginning of the reading. Example:

وَاِنَّ مِنْ شِيْعَتِهِ لَاِبْرَاهِيْمَ ۢاِذَاجَٓاءَرَبَّهُ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيْمٍ (الصفات :83-84)
اَنَّهُمْ اَصْحَابُ النَّارِۢالَّذِيْنَ يَحْمِلُوْنَ اْلعَرْشَ (المؤمنون :6-7)

b. Tha sign ( ط ) artinya waqaf Muthlaq (المُطْلَقْ)
That is a sign that indicates the ability of waqf is also washal, it's just that waqf is more important, especially if the reader's breath is short. Example:

وَلَايُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمْ مِنْ عَذَابِهَاؕكَذٰالِكَ نَجْزِى كُلَّ كَفُوْرٍ (فاطر :36)
وَلَاتَبْغِ اْلفَسَادَ فِى اْلاَرْضِؕ اِنَّ اللهَ لَايُحِبُّ اْلمُفْسِدِيْنَ (القصص:77)

c. Mark Jim (ج) meaning waqaf Jaiz (الجَائِزِ)
That is a sign that indicates the ability of waqf and washal is just better waqf than washal, considering the position of waqf jaiz under waqf lazim and waqf muthlak. Pontoh:

فَهَلْ يَنْظُرُوْنَ اِلَّاالسَّاعَةَ اَنْ تَأْتِيَهُمْ بَغْتَةً ۚفَقَدْجَاءَاَشْرَاطُهَا ۚ

ذٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ ۚ فَمَنْ شَآءَاتَّخَذَاِلٰی رَبِّهِ مَأٰ بًا

d. Signs of Qaf and Fa’ (قف ) artinya waqaf sighat fiil amar (ْصِغَةْ فِعِلْ اَمَر) namely the ability to endow speech, it's just that there's nothing wrong with washing it even though it's better to make waqf. The sign is mentioned with the sign of Waqaf Mustahab (المُسْتَحَبُّ). Example:

وَلَوْشَآءَ اللهُ مَااقْتَتَلُوْاقف وَلٰكِنَّ اللهَ يَفْعَلُ مَايُرِيْدُ. (البقرة: ٢٥٣
الٓمٓقف تِلْكَ اٰيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ الْحَكِيْمِ (لقمان: ٢-١

e. Qaf mark, Lam and alif (قلى) it means hall waqf (الوَقْفُ اَوْلٰى) , namely the ability of washal, just quitting is better than washal. Example:

عَلٰى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيْمٍ ۗ تَنْزِيْلُ الْعَزِيْزِ الْرَّحِيْمِ (يس: ٤– ٥

وَوَصّٰى بِهَا اِبْرَاهِيْمُ بَنِيْهِ وَيَعْقُوْبُ ۗيٰبَنِيَّ اِنَّ اللهَ اصْطَفٰى لَكُمُ الدِّيْنَ (البقرة :۱۳۲

 2 . A better sign goes on

a. Tanda Za’ ( ز ) meaning Waqaf Mujawwaz ( المُجَوَّزُ )
That is a sign of waqf that can be continued and can be stopped, It's just that it's better to continue than to stop, because the sign of mujawwaz is the opposite of the sign of jaiz. Example:

اَمْ لِلْاِنْسَانِ مَاتَمَنَّى ز فَلِلّهِ اْلاٰخِرَةِ وَاْلاُوْلٰى (النجم :۲٤-۲٥
فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَمَا اَنْتَ بِمَلُوْمٍ ز وَذَكِّرْ فَاِنَّ الذِّكْرٰى تَنْفَعُ اْلمُؤْمِنِيْنَ

b. Shad sign ( ص ) meaning the end of Murakhash ( الْمُرَخَّصُ )
That is a sign that indicates the existence of generosity stops, even if it is revealed it is better. The generosity is due to the verse being read too long or under compulsion. Example:

وَابْتَغُوْا مَاكَتَبَ اللهُ لَكُمْ ص وَكُلُوْاوَاشْرَبُوْا (البقرة: ۱۸۷
وَأْتُوااْلبُيُوْتَ مِنْ اَبْوَابِهَا ص وَاتَّقُواللهَ لَعلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُوْنَ (البقرة: ۱۸۹

c. Qaf mark ( ق ) meaning Waqaf Qila Waqaf ( قِيْلَ اْلوَقْفُ )
That is a sign of waqf that indicates the meaning of disagreement, whether on the utterance it can stop or not. In this case, it is better to choose an opinion that is mewashal, because this opinion is better. Some scholars mention the sign 'Inda Qouli' (عِنْدَ اْلقَوْلِ). Example:

اَنْ لَٓااِلٰهَ اِلَّااَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ ق اِنِّى كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِيْنَ (الانبياء: ۸۷
وَاَّلذِيْنَ اَشْرَكُوْا ق اِنَّ اللهَ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ اْلقِيَامَةِ (الحج: ۱۷

d. Shad sign, Lam and Alif ( صلى ) means Washal Hall ( الوَصْلُ الاَوْلٰى )
That is a sign that indicates the existence of washal is better than waqf. Example:

.وَيَقْتُلُوْنَ النَّبِيّٖنَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍ ۖ وَيَقْتُلُوْنَ اَّلذِيْنَ يَأْمُرُوْنَ بِاْلقِسْطِ مِنَ النَّاسِ
وَلَمَّا سَكَتَ عَنْ مُوْسَى الغَضَبُ اَخَذَ اْلاَلْوَاحَ ۖ وَفِى نُسْخَتِهَا هُدًى… (الاعراف: ۱٥٤

e. Mark Lam Alif ( لا ) Artinya La Waqta Fihi (لَاوَقْفَ فِيْهِ )
That is a sign that indicates the absence of waqf in the marked lafad, so it is better to continue reading than to stop. Example:

فَاِمَّاتَرَيِنَّ مِنَ اْلبَشَرِ اَحَدًا ۙ فَقُوْلِىْ اِنِّى نَذَرْتُ لِلرَّحْمٰنِ صَوْمًا (مريم: ۲٦

اُشْدُدْ بِهِ اَزْرِىْ ۙ وَاَشْرِكْهُ فِى اَمْرِىْ ۙ كَىْ نُسَبِّحَكَ كَثِيْرًا ( طه: ٣١ – ٣٣

f. Tanda Kaf (ڪ ) meaning Kadzalika Muthobiqon Five Qoblaha ( كَذٰلِكَ مُطَابِقًالِمَاقَبْلَهَا ) which is a sign that indicates the similarity between the sign and the previous sign. Until the pronunciation of the predecessor is better waqf, then this sign indicates waqf, conversely if the predecessor is better washal, then this sign indicates washal. Example:

وَاِنْ تَفْعَلُوْا فَاِنَّهُ فُسُوْقٌ بِكُمْ ۗ وَاتَّقُوْااللهَ ڪ وَيُعَلِّمُكُمُ اللهُ ڪ وَاللهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْئٍ عَلِيْمٌ (البقرة: ۲٨٢
وَاْلعٰدِيٰتِ ضَبْحًا ۙ فَاْلمُوْرِيٰتِ قَدْحًا ڪ فَاْلمُغِيْرَاتِ صُبْحًا ڪ (العٰدِيٰتِ: ١ – ٣

g. Mark a pair of three dots (؞___؞ ) means the sign of Mu'anaqah ( المُعَانَقَةُ ) which is a sign indicating that the reader should stop reading at one of the two pairs of dots. Example:

وَلَاتُلْقُوْا بِاَيْدِيْكُمْ اِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ؞ وَاَحْسِنُوْا؞

Can stop after: التَّهْلُكَةِ can also be after: وَاَحْسِنُوْا but not on both.

ذٰلِكَ اْلكِتَاَبُ لَارَيْبَ؞ فِيْهِ؞ هُدًى لِلْمُتَّقِيْنَ

Can stop after: رَيْبَ can also be after: فِيْهِ but not on both.
