The Law of Prayer 'Eid in the Mosque or the Field
LAW OF PRAYER 'IED IN MASIID OR IN THE FIELD
The law of ‘ledul Fitri and‘ Iedul Adlha prayers is sunnah muakkadah (highly recommended but not mandatory). Although the sunnah worship is muakkadah, Rasulullah saw. never leave her twice a year. Imam As-Syaukani said:
"Know that the Prophet (saw) kept on performing the two Eid prayers and never left one of the several Eid prayers..
And he commanded his people to come out to him, to order the woman, hedgehog girls and women who haidl. He told menstruating women to stay away from prayers and witness the goodness and call of the Muslims. He even told a woman who did not have a hijab for her brother to lend her the hijab ".
The Eid prayer is not required to be performed in the mosque. In fact, according to Imam Malik, the Eid prayer is better carried out in an open field. Because the Prophet Muhammad SAW always did the Eid prayer in the field not at the Prophet's Mosque unless there was rain or other obstacles. The difference between the field and the mosque is that the field is in an open area, while the mosque is in a place (building) closed.
The ‘Ied prayer is sunnah to be performed in the open field, and is not performed in a mosque except when in an emergency (like rain, strong winds and more). (al-Hafidz Ibnu Hajar al-Asqalani, Fat al Baari, volume 5: 282)
Dalil Hukum Sholat 'Ied
Evidence showing that it is sunnah to perform the Eid prayer in the mushalla (field) is a hadith from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri ra. he said:
Doing the 'Eid prayer in the mushalla / field is sunnah, because in the past the Prophet SAW went out into the open and left his mosque (namely the Prophet's Mosque which is more important than other mosques). Likewise the caliphs’ al-Rashidin. And this is the agreement of the Muslims. They have agreed in every age and place to go out into the open field when performing ‘Ied prayers.
Imam al-Syafi'i's opinion
However, It's legal to perform the Eid prayer in the mosque (licit) allowed. Imam al-Syafi'i stated if the mosque is able to accommodate the entire population in the area, then they no longer have to go to the open ground (to perform the Eid prayer) because the prayer 'Eid in the mosque is more important. But if it can't accommodate the entire population, then it is not recommended to pray 'Eid in the mosque. Like the words of Imam Shafi'i:
From this fatwa of Imam al-Syafi'i, al-Hafidz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani has concluded as follows: “From sim’ can be concluded, that this problem really depends on the breadth or narrowness of a place, because it is hoped that on Hari Raya the whole community can gather in one place.
Therefore, if the legal factor is for people to gather (astral conjunction'), Then the Eid prayer can be done in the mosque, then performing the ‘Ied prayer in the mosque is more important than in the open field”. (al-Hafidz Ibnu Hajar al-Asqalani, Fathul Baari, volume 5, h. 283)
Conclusion
In fact, performing the Eid prayer is sunnah, both in the mosque and in the field. However, implementing it in the field or in the mosque does not determine which is more appropriate. Prayers in the field will be more afdlal if the mosque is not able to accommodate the congregation. However, holding Ied prayers is more important in the mosque if it is able to accommodate the congregation. The main focus in the law of Eid prayer is to be able to gather the community to declare victory, Happiness and togetherness
Among the wisdom of gathering the Muslims in one place is to show the victory of the Muslims; to strengthen faith and fortify confidence; to express the phenomenon of joy on Hari Raya; to express one form of gratitude to Allah SWI ’; and to intimidate the enemies of religion and make Muslims respected. Wallahua'lam bishshawab.
