The prayer of the Prophet Jonah
The prayer of Jonah -is a prayer found in the Quran surah Al Anbiya verse 87. Why is it named after Jonah's prayer? Because this prayer is a prayer that was read by the Prophet Yunus when he was experiencing a difficulty and was between life and death.
Many prayers are mentioned in the Qur'an, which comes from the story of an earlier Prophet with many values and wisdom of life.
Prayer of the Prophet Jonah in Arabic
The prayer of the Prophet Yunus as has been widely recited and practiced by Muslims in various parts of the world as an opening prayer so that Allah Subhanallahu SWT grants all good prayers.. The prayer of the Prophet Jonah (as) comes from a fragment of a verse from the Qur'an (Al Anbiya) verse 87 and 88, that is :
That means :
And remember the story (Dzun Nuun Yunus), when he left in a rage, then he thought that We would not narrow it down-complicate it, then he cried out in the dark : Laa ilaaha illa anta, Subhaanaka innii kuntu minaz zhaalimiin. “There is really no deity who has the right to be worshiped other than You. Glory be to Thee, Verily, I am one of the wrongdoers.". So We answered his prayer and delivered him from grief, and thus did We save the believers.. (QS Al Anbiya 87- 88)
Well from the verse above, The following is an excerpt of the verse of the letter Al Anbiya verse (87), which is a prayer of the Prophet Jonah, when he was experiencing the hardships and hardships of life. Even the prayer of the Prophet Yunus himself is one small piece with the following extraordinary meaning biasa:
لاَ اِلَهَ اِلاَّ اَنْتَ , سُبْحَا نَكَ اِنِّى كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّا لِمِيْنَ
Prayer of the Prophet Jonah in Latin
The following example:
Laa ilaaha illaa anta, Subhaanaka innii kuntu minaz zhaalimiin (Al Anbiya : 87)
The Meaning of the Prayer of the Prophet Yunus
The prayer of the Prophet Yunus has an extraordinary meaning. His prayer was short, does not make this prayer have a mediocre meaning. On the contrary, Jonah's prayer has an extraordinary meaning when one reads it at the beginning of every prayer, maka Insya Alloh, Allah swt will grant all prayers.
The meaning of the prayer of the Prophet Yunus:
There is no god but Allah, Glory be to Thee. Really, I am one of the wrongdoers. (QS. Al Anbiya 21 :87)
The prayer and the verse of Surat Al-Anbiya tells about Allah swt's help to Prophet Yunus when he experienced (three) kind of darkness. That is the first darkness of night, which is without explanation at all. Imagine.
Darkness (second) is the darkness of the deep ocean. Quiet, dark, and no friends at all. The inside makes the floor dark and the feeling of tightness is felt more and more in a person, This was also experienced by the Prophet Yunus at the same time. And darkness (third) is the darkness in the belly of a whale.
Even the name of the mention of Dzun-Nuun in the Verse (87) Surah Al-Anbiya is a nickname for Prophet Yunus because he had experienced being eaten by a whale. From the word Nuun itself, it means fish. This story was also told by the Prophet Muhammad SAW to his companions, Here are the words that the Prophet Muhammad once gave:
That means :
Doa Dzun Nuun (Prophet Jonah) the time he prayed in the whale's belly was : Laa ilaaha illa anta, Subhaanaka inni kuntu minaz zhaalimin. There is no god worthy of worship except You, Glory be to Thee. Lo! I am of those who do wrong. Indeed, it is not for a Muslim to pray to him in a matter unless Allah grants it to him. (HR Tirmudzi No. 3505. Shaykh Al-Albani said that this hadith is authentic)

The Story Behind Jonah's Prayer
(Prophet Yunus bin Matta ‘Alaihis salam) is one of the prophets sent by Allah SWT for the people of Nineveh, which is located in the country of Mousul Iraq. Prophet Yunus invited all his people to call for repentance to Allah SWT. But his people also rejected the teachings and call of the Prophet Jonah and remained in their error and disbelief.
Because of the extreme unbelief of the people of Nineveh, The prophet Jonah left his people with an angry feeling. Prophet Yunus also threatened the land of Nineveh with a punishment from Allah SWT that will be revealed to them in three days. And after three days have passed, the punishment that Jonah said also came to them.
The descent of the punishment proves that the Prophet Yunus was not a liar, and Prophet Yunus is truly a Prophet sent by Allah SWT to warn them to return to the right path, they finally realized and regretted their mistake.
After that they went to the desert with their children, and livestock and also the animals they ride like camels by separating the mother from her young. After that they prayed and asked Allah swt to give them safety.
Even the farm animals say, as well as their pets along with their children, all say and ask forgiveness of Allah ‘Azza wa jalla. Until Allah swt lifts the punishment that was sent down on them. And Allah swt also said:
فَلَوْ لاَ كَانَتْ قَريَةٌ اَمَنَتْ فَتَفَعَهَا اِيْمَانُهَا اِلاَّ قَوْمَ يُونُسَ لَمَّا اَمَنُوا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمْ عَذَابَ الْخِزْيِ فِى الْهَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَمَتَّعْنَا هُمْ اِلَى حِينٍ
That means :
And why not (population) a city of faith, Then his faith benefited him other than the Yunus people? When they (The people of Jonah), believers, We removed from them the punishment of humiliation in the life of the world, And We gave them pleasure for a certain time. (QS Yunus : 98)
On the other side, The prophet Jonah who left in anger. he went with some of his people in a small boat. After they are in the middle of the sea at night, their boat was hit by a big wave. The passengers on the boat panicked and feared that they would drown.
They think that the ship they are on is too heavy with their large number of them. Finally, they held a lottery. Where the loser in the lottery will be thrown into the ocean in order to lighten the load of the boat, so that their boats can survive in the middle of the big waves.
After the draw is received, it turns out that the lottery fell on the prophet Yunus, the passengers of the boat refused to throw Jonah into the middle of the sea. Finally they tried to do the lottery again. And it turned out that the lottery fell back to the Prophet Jonah. But the passengers of the boat were still not willing if the Prophet Yunus had to plunge into the sea.
Then the draw is done again, and the result still fell to Jonah. Finally he stood up, and took off his clothes and then he threw himself into the middle of a pitch -dark ocean. At that time a large whale appeared that split the ocean and swallowed Prophet Yunus.
Previously, Allah swt had inspired the pope, so as not to kill him . "Thou shalt not eat the flesh thereof, nor break the bones thereof, because Yunus is not the sustenance that I give to you. Indeed, I have made your belly a prison for him.”
In that situation, Prophet Yunus has been tested with three types of darkness that can break hope and cause despair. (Three) the darkness is, its dark, the bottom of the ocean and the darkness in the belly of the fish. While in that situation, he continued to pray to Allah swt.
That means : There is no god but You, Glory be to Thee. Really, I am one of the wrongdoers.
Seeing himself in reinforcements’ and a test from Allah swt, the tasbih and the prayer continued to be recited by him ‘Alaihis salam so that Allah swt wants to forgive, save and restore him to his people who have already repented. This is as narrated in the letter of Al-Anbiya verse (87) – (88).
Prophet Yunus was aware that all the difficulties and hardships that befell him at that time were the result of all his mistakes and sins.. he is also aware that the only one who can reduce difficulties and difficulties is from Allah Azza wa jalla. He believes that the one who can forgive and relieve his difficulties is only Allah swt.
Allah is almighty and has the power to forgive every sin and mistake of His servants and grant all their prayers. Only Allah swt is able to save himself from all the problems and difficulties that have befallen him from all difficulties. Allah swt says:
That means :
Or who accepts the prayer of the afflicted when he prays to Him and removes the affliction and makes you human beings as caliphs in the earth. Is there any other god besides Allah?? Very few of you remember (Nya). (QS An Naml :62)
Such is the discussion of this prayer, May be useful
