Location of the temple
Mendut Temple is a Buddhist temple. This temple is located 2 km southeast of the capital of Magelang Regency, 3 km east of Borobudur temple and 1,5 km north of Pavon temple.
Or on Jalan Mayor Kusen, Mendut, Maybe, Magelang, Central Java, around 38 km northwest of Yogyakarta. This temple is next to Pavon Temple and Borobudur Temple so the three temples are in a straight north-south line.
Regarding when it was built, there is no certainty yet. However, J.G. de Casparis suspects that Mendut Temple was built by the first king of the Sialendra dynasty in 824 AD. This statement is based on the Karangteng inscription (824 M), which states that King Indra built a sacred building called Venuvana. Kasparis defines Venuvana (bamboo forest) as Mendut Temple. Mendut Temple is believed to be older than Barabudhur Temple.
This temple was first discovered in 1836 in a buried bush, which was corrected on 1897-1904. The entrance to Mendut Temple is truly unique because it faces northwest, unlike temples in Java in general, which faces east.
Mendut Temple, which is a rectangular plan, has height 26,40 meters with 48 stupa. The body of this Buddhist temple stands at a height of approx 2 meter. On the surface of the bathyoura there is a rather wide corridor equipped with a balustrade. The foot of the temple wall is decorated with 31 panels with various relief stories, Beautiful engraving with colors and antennae. Almost all of the architecture is built from strong natural stone. other than that, in the temple room there is 3 the statue is quite large, each of which is made from a lump of whole stone, including:
- Shakyamuni, Facing west in a sitting position.
- Ashokiteshvara, facing south, also in a sitting position. Avalokiteshvara – Bodhi animal that helps people.
- Maitreya, standing in the north in a sitting pose. Maitreya as the savior of mankind in the future.
Relics of the kingdom
Mendut Temple is a relic of the Sylendra dynasty, who ruled the kingdom of Medang, during the reign of King Indra.
Candi, which is believed to have started in 824 M, based on the inscription on the Karangteng inscription. The Sialendra dynasty was a powerful king dynasty in Central Java, Sumatra, India, and Cambodia.
The shape looks majestic and strong with a high basement beneath it.
There are also stairs and an entrance located on the southwest side, and above the crypt there is a corridor that surrounds the temple. Meanwhile, there are three levels on the roof of the temple, decorated with stupas in total 48 fruit.
